There are several misconceptions about the subject matter of faith. These misconceptions have left many believers experiencing an unfulfilled and unsatisfactory walk with God. This is because they do not understand what faith is. Some others confuse faith with hope. This is why it is important to understand what faith is.
Faith is great trust or confidence in something or someone. It is not just a mere assumption or wishful thinking—it is deeply rooted in the truth of God’s Word. Faith is essential in our walk with God because it serves as evidence of our dependence on Him.
The Bible tells us in Hebrews 11:6 that; “Without faith, it is impossible to please God.”
Faith requires action. It is more than just believing in God’s power; it is trusting Him enough to step out, even when we don’t see the full picture. When we pray, we are expressing our faith—believing that God hears us and will respond according to His perfect will.
One powerful moment where Jesus addressed the issue of faith was when He calmed the storm. In Matthew 8:23-27, Jesus and His disciples were in a boat when a violent storm arose. The waves crashed, the wind howled, and fear gripped the disciples. Rather than panic, Jesus expressed faith by speaking peace to the . storm. Having established what faith is, what then is the difference between faith and hope?

The Difference Between Faith and Hope
The Bible defines faith in Hebrews 11:1: “ Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” This means that faith is the bridge between expectation and manifestation.
While hope is conceived in the heart, it does not necessarily require expression. It is the quiet confidence that something good will happen. However, faith requires action and confession. In order to receive what we are believing for, we must speak in faith. Romans 10:10 tells us, “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
In simple terms:
- Hope is the expectation of what could be.
- Faith takes it a step further by declaring and acting on that expectation.
For example, hope says, “I believe God can heal me,” while faith says, “By His stripes, I am healed” (Isaiah 53:5) and acts accordingly.
Faith and Hope Work Together
Hope sets the vision, but faith makes it a reality. Without hope, faith has nothing to work with, and without faith, hope remains just a distant possibility. When we align both with God’s Word, we position ourselves to see His promises fulfilled in our lives.
